Learn Koine Greek ( the original language of the New Testament )
Would you like to be able to read the New Testament in its original language?
Would you like to appreciate the amazing work that went into providing us the Bible in English?
Faith Baptist Church is running beginner’s Greek classes.
Who is it for?
* all ages!
* all backgrounds!
* anyone who wants to encounter the text in its original form!
Won’t it be too difficult?
There’s no need to be good at heavy academic study. We will not be taking the traditional approach of a hard slog through dry text books filled with grammar tables to memorise. The course is based on acquiring the language naturally by hearing it and speaking it. Complex explanations are kept to a minimum. The videos we use are fun and suitable for children. They contain no English (and are made mainly with the global mission field in mind) but we will be discussing them in English!
How will it work?
* A weekly 1-hour class via Zoom (Thursdays 7.00 pm)
* Based on the “Alpha With Angela” video series but with lots of games and interaction
* A little bit of homework! A little bit, often, is the best approach for languages. This can be as simple as re-watching the videos (or listening on your commute).
What do I need?
* A device to use with Zoom – something with a larger screen than a phone would be ideal (so you can see the materials)
* Pencil and paper (you might like to keep a notebook)
* Preferably, a printer (or I can give you print-outs at Church on Sundays)
How long does it take to learn Greek?
* After just a week or two, you will know the alphabet and be able to pronounce any Greek word. This helps when using Bible study resources that have Greek writing, for example interlinears and concordances. You will be able to greet your classmates in Greek, ask them how they’re going, understand the teacher’s instructions even in Greek, etc.
* After a few weeks you will be able to generally understand some carefully chosen verses from the New Testament. We begin looking at Scripture right from Lesson 1.
* Most people take about a year to be able to begin reading the New Testament more fully (with the help of a glossary). At this stage you can also understand other Greek texts from that era, for example the Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint).
When do classes start?
Classes start the first Thursday of October (Oct 1st) at 7.00pm and will run for ten weeks.
New classes will be available in 2027.
